Wimborne Minster itself started as a nunnery and monastery in the times of the Saxons – in fact it was the King of the West Saxon’s sister that started the nunnery. It is said to be the resting place of King Alfred the Great’s brother, King Ethelred, king of Wessex from 865-871. The Minster is built from Dorset limestone and New Forest stone, with extensions that have Norman and Gothic architecture. It is home to the second largest chained library with works that include the book of sermons which belonged to Catherine of Aragon, as well as the tombs of King Henry VII’s maternal grandparents. Wimborne Minster has an ancient working quarterjack clock. This astronomical clock, which chimes every hour and has the sun and moon circling the earth, can be found in the west tower.

Wimborne Minster may be the main focal point in Wimborne, but the town has plenty of other attractions to offer too. The popular Allendale Centre holds events for visitors of all ages as well as a market every Friday. Located in an 18th century mill, the Walford Mill Craft Centre is a dream for many local artists and art lovers, while the Museum of East Dorset holds many of the town’s historical artefacts. The River Stour’s source is in Stourhead, Wiltshire, continuously flowing downstream to the mouth of the river at Christchurch Harbour, where it then continues out into the English channel. As well as fishing, if you are a member of the Wimborne & District Angling Club, there are many other activities to enjoy on the Stour in Wimborne. Many geocaches are hidden for seekers to find and Dreamboats offer paddle boarding and kayak hire for keen water sports enthusiasts.
